Komachi's Travel Guide

The Road of the Most High is a straight thoroughfare, cutting northwest through all three rings of Otosan Uchi before entering the Forbidden City. It runs between the Kanjo District and Chisei districts in the Ekohikei and through the Hidari district in the Toshisoto. Buildings have been moved or destroyed to accommodate it, and no less than twenty feet of open space must surround it at all times.

The road consists of a base, paved with polished flagstones, and an elevated level of wooden planks. Only the Emperor and the imperial retinue may travel the elevated portion. When the Emperor walks through the city on this road, all traffic beneath it must halt. All must stop what they are doing and bow as the Emperor passes.

Occasionally someone is caught passing beneath the section of the road on which the Emperor walks. This is considered an incredible blessing upon the subject, but is only valid if the subject knew nothing of the Emperor’s arrival; loitering near the Road of the Most High with the hopes of coercing the Emperor’s blessing is a sign of gross distaste.
