It is strange to see one so young in such an important position, but Hayashi’s gift is unmistakable. He crafts the flowers and foliage of the Crane embassy with a hand that seems to be guided by the kami themselves. When I visit the gardens, I often find him simply sitting. Listening, he says. He will meditate like this for days, then act in a flurry of work to create the masterpieces that grace the Embassy grounds.
